Program Introduction


The course is led by the internationally famous designers and DeTao Masters Professor Jane Gottelier and Professor Patrick Gottelier who established the revolutionary UK fashion brand `Artwork'. They have over 25 year experience in running a successful Fashion company with their brand stocked by many of the most prestigious fashion retailers worldwide. The Gotteliers have also been retained as consultants to a host of international fashion companies such as Marks and Spencers, Shanghai Tang and The Limited. More recently they established a comprehensive, new, ground breaking and highly acclaimed program of Fashion courses at Falmouth University in the UK.


Training Goals


To cultivate and maximise students creativity in fashion design. Develop their professional skills, knowledge of the business of Fashion and understanding of their personal social responsibilities. We aim to equip them with the skills required to achieve the career paths of their choice in a rapidly changing socio economic environment with finite resources.


Curriculum Description

 

The DeTao/GOTTELIER Advanced Fashion Design Program is a comprehensive course system taught through practical projects (Learning by doing) and spiral learning. – It focuses on developing creativity, critical, conceptual thinking and cooperative working that create commercial and social value. Students learn the 6 principals of fashion design simultaneously. Research, Drawing, Design, Pattern-Cutting, Garment Construction, and Visual & Verbal communication; The 6 principals form the basis of the creative spiral becoming more complex and demanding as the course progresses.

The DeTao/GOTTELIER Advanced Fashion Design program brings the very best of International fashion education methods, designers and teachers here to Shanghai. We also have the unparalleled advantage of being able to collaborate with the best Chinese manufacturers, designers and retailers our learning environment is further enhanced by its direct linkage to GOTTELIER Studio which involves teaching staff in a wide range of commercial projects and allows advanced students live commercial experience whilst still studying.

Students may develop his/her own Fashion design company.
Pursue a career in a high end Chinese or international Fashion brand such as:
Fashion, knitwear and sportswear designer, researcher, stylist, merchandiser or buyer.
Enter the world of Public Relations or marketing.
Contribute to the blossoming reputation of creative Chinese Fashion Designers internationally.
Or continue onto a Master’s degree anywhere in the world and pursue a career in academia.


Selection of students


We will assess all applicants' creativity, problem solving and aesthetic potential in relation to the world of Fashion. Students will be asked to write a short piece in English and complete a simple creative task which will be evaluated prior to them being invited to sit the entrance examination. Students successful at the first stage will be asked to attend the two day entrance examination which consists of individual and collaborative tasks as well as a personally interview. The Gotteliers have extensive experience in assessing students’ creative potential. We therefore encourage all students who have a serious passion to study Creative Fashion Design combined with the capacity to work hard in achieving their dreams to consider applying to our program.
