Dear 2020 TA graduates,

The field of art, which we know as technoetic, increasingly sees the blending of the virtual and the real, the online and the concrete. The art world, reflecting the current international order, is unstable and insecure; Planet Earth is in crisis. However, Art will survive, and you are in the vanguard of change!

In all this complexity, with the guidance and care of your teachers, you have learned to see, to study and research,  to experiment, express, and build, leading  you to  a level of ability and creativity that  provides a firm basis for your professional advancement in  whatever domain of art you may choose to practice.

This has been no ordinary programme of study. The Technoetic Arts  Studio is a creative organism, unique in the world, with its programme invested in Cybernetics, and the study of Moistmedia, Cyberception, and the creative nexus of Behavior, Identity and Environment. All strategies of practice are  allied to speculative theory, and contextualised within relative cultural paradigms, aiming to encompass a syncretic appreciation of the cultures of the world.

I congratulate you on your graduation. Go well, seek out and give to the world, beauty, truth, and compassion; apply your skills and creativity generously and wisely; contribute fully to your culture and your country.

The future is yours and you are the future!

The Double Life of Superorganisms

Bill ZHOU

Descriptions:

The Double Life of Superorganisms is a moist media installation art piece as well as an interdisciplinary artistic research. In the artwork, a slime mold colony and an ant colony which are scientifically known as superorganisms were connected ecologically through an electronic system, forming an information cycle. This art and research project seeks to discuss the inconceivable connection between events through a metaphorical method, thus crossing the boundary between non-human biology and human culture. Ant and slime mold, considered as superorganisms, is merged with machines both physically and conceptually to create a brand new collective, which I call, an Ant-slime Continuum.

Recommendations:

For me, Weird Connection is the most striking concept. It gives the artwork to a way of developing like ‘Rhizome’, strange but natural.

D.Sense

Siska XIE

Descriptions:

‘21st century media’ is a concept proposed by media scientist Mark Hanson (2014), which refers to a trend that is mostly the result of the media revolution triggered by digital computing: today‘s microsensors and Smart devices allow direct intervention in sensory confusion, and the extent of this intervention is unprecedented. From the perspective of audio-visual, it constructs a digital-physical system as the future media. It converts the content obtained by the audience to digital sound in real-time, simulating the sophisticated sensory experience of humans on the external environment in the future scenario. Audiences are encouraged to speculate on the post-human sensory system, hoping that the audience can pay attention to the development of technology and media, and consider a broader range of issues, such as regulating reality, what social problems will be caused by redefining the relationship between external objects and humans.

Junkai CHEN

Recommendations:

The work shows the new media that affects sight and hearing in the post-human era, and has done experiments based on synthetic patterns, and the project is innovative, interactive, rich in content, and is an excellent work of art.

Future AI Religion

Descriptions:

Nowadays, more than 80% of the entire population has religious belief, while almost everyone lives on technology. Christian needs to accept baptism at some point in their life, while we are now accepting baptism of data and information whenever and wherever possible. Could we say we now accepting baptism of the AI religion?

Junkai CHEN

Recommendations:

This work is a group work, establishing a special virtual space-ritual, inviting viewers to have a dialogue with the god-like AI in the digital world. The establishment of the dialogue, the source and the creation of the poetry collection, this dialogue process is a kind of simulated question and answer, but it is also a question we ask about the future.

Future Evolution

Liz SUN

Descriptions:

Human has evolved into what they like through continuous evolution under the interference of millions of external factors. The social environment is one of the most important of these factors. Our contemporary society is now increasingly mediated by technology and artificial intelligence. With constant media exposure to images of women with “big eyes, large bust, and wasp waists ”, we start to believe that this narrow ideal is the sole standard of beauty for women and turn to plastic surgery to become a member of the beautiful class. Technology is also changing our body structure by changing our physical habits: people are now addicted to media. We often see people with their heads bowed down, hunched overusing their smartphones without caring about the impact these positions have on their bone structure. How are people adapting themselves to this shift in aesthetic ideals and physiology? How will we end up living in a world where we increasingly become composite with this “machine”?

Hong ZHANG

Recommendations:

In the process of graduation creation, the student is very earnest and diligent. The topic selection is a novelty, she combines topics such as aesthetic standards of the public, technological development, social media application, and future human conjecture in her paper and works. In this paper, the author put the result of a practical survey in reality as thesis evidence to point to the pain. And for the creation of works, the author has match the current hot topic to adjust the works, and let the works have some promptness. In the process of creation, the author made this kind of works from repeated experiments on materials with a clear sense of self. It can also give the audience a reflection on the relationship between the individual and the new technology under social media.

Replicator

Esther LIU

Descriptions:

The work is a sound art installation based on microorganisms. Creation is reflecting on ‘Who am I?’ in the process of, I tried to explain the broader ‘I’ based on the microbial architecture. The work of connecting people to people, people to space, and people to objects, through the exchange of these fragmented information, tries to throw away the body and reconstruct and explain ‘I’. The microbes are converted into visual information, and then the information is generated into sound. During the process of data processing, a variety of sensory exchanges are generated. The work is trying to explain humanity in another way, and experience humanity in another way.

Hong ZHANG

Recommendations:

The student's creation starts from knowing self and discussing the relationship between humans and microorganisms. The topic is novel, and how to explain "I" is a difficult problem in itself. The discussion and thinking of this problem are ultimately attributed to the work experiment This is very good. The student has undergone a lot of experimentation and thinking in the creative process. The use of lights and sounds as the export of data externalization in the work can also give people an intuitive experience. The work itself is not an answer to the questions raised and a clear argument, but an entrance to the viewer's thinking.

Odeile LIU

Descriptions:

With the advent of the Cyborg upsurge, people fantasize about all sorts of things in the Cyborg era. When the Cyborg era comes, can plants evolve themselves under the influence of the Cyborg environment?  In this work, trying to expand the perception of plants, the audience can intuitively feel the feedback from this system through vision and hearing.  The aim is to reflect on the disadvantages and parochialism of the human-centered mode of production and life through the benign and intuitive interaction between plants and human behavior.

Raw0 is a work full of connectivity. The work itself is an information medium, which enables participants to expand their feelings through the medium and through the plant Cyborg, and can understand the feelings of plants from the visual and auditory ways.  The author wants to put human beings back on the equal position of all things, let human beings respect other creatures and know that these creatures and human beings are a community of fate.

Resonance of Sound

Sun

Descriptions:

Now, communication is not just a kind of language information transmission. Unilateral information infusion cannot complete real communication. The so-called communication is more like seeking a kind of resonance . As the system in cybernetics has unlimited possibilities for development. Resonance at the conscious level makes the   communication truly happen. Language is a material, which build a bridge between two sides. In Beuys's work, language is no longer regarded as instilling information and ideas. It uses communication beyond language to establish a relationship. In this relationship, balance is sought, and their resonance is found in balance. Audio and visual are like a language, carrying consciousness, and at a certain frequency, it will resonate with you.

Recommendations:

The visual effects of sound, device and corresponding sound and picture are completely aesthetic and innovative, with a high degree of technical integrity, especially in the integration of visual and musical effects.

The Tower

Hogan CHEN

Descriptions:

With the development of science and technology, human beings have a reason to move towards "unification". Architecture, as a carrier that embraces human civilization, bears this responsibility time and time again. I was inspired by the "Babel" to try to create a utopian architecture of all humanity.

Junkai CHEN

Recommendations:

We have never seen Babel, maybe we have seen symbols of ancient or modern civilization. Our yearning for monument is also infinitely guessing: who are we? Why are you here? The answer is what we want to express through the work.

Tony DING

Descriptions:

Will we lose our body?

Hill Jiang

Descriptions:

The work starts with the discussion of "Will we lose our body"? This project explores problems through experimental methods such as uploading consciousness to the Internet, using the body to create, and making virtual societies, which are expressed in the form of installation. This device is mainly composed of real and virtual parts. The first virtual part: is the interactive image on the screen; The second real part: the latitude and longitude of the physical space. In the virtual part, the screen shows the image of a person composed by web addresses, These URLs spread out from a center. The reason to choose the website as the expression is because it is the epitome of behavior in the online world. In the real part, the line, which is the symbol of the latitude and longitude in real space, extend below the screen. The device connects the two parts of virtual space and reality, and converts the traces of people in the real space into the traces on the Internet, that is, the URL. It implies that our physical activities in the real world are gradually transformed into a state without physical carriers. This project hopes to explore whether the body can be separated from consciousness. The installation always asked the audience, "Will we lose our body"?

Hong ZHANG

Recommendations:

With the rapid development of modern and information-based society, people are facing great pressure of life, and "soft addiction" is a phenomenon of mental addiction born in order to escape from reality in this high-pressure environment.  FLOAT01 intervenes soft addiction based on the existing addiction mechanism and establishes a new set of brain pleasure circuits to help people get rid of the invasion of soft addiction and arouse people's reflection and attention on this problem.

Jessie DONG

Recommendations:

Softaddition or hardaddition may be hidden in the heart of every viewer.  Current data, previous simulations and ancient games seem to be pulling our pace.  The work is the interpretation or question of this traction process.  Can it be reinterpreted?  Deconstruction?  Unravel?

Balance

Healer WANG

Descriptions:

Social stereotype is prevalent in our daily life. In cities, local people and non-local people are the main subjects. Due to the differences in regional culture and economic level, it sometimes becomes a kind of prejudice. Taking Shanghai as the research site, I abstracted the static data of urban development with people's joint efforts into animation to express people's value and projected it on the architectural model.

Nolan Huang

Recommendations:

Starting from the literature review and questionnaire survey in the paper, the project used the form of Mapping to project onto a geometric surface with Shanghai architecture as the model through aesthetic interpretation and abstraction elements creation of the images, information and content collected from the data. There are various attempts in the presentation and technology of the work. For the selection, production and divergence from the data of Mapping objects, the visual presentation of the creation is also aesthetic, with various attempts and unique thinking perspectives.

十三、Silva +

Silva XIAO

Descriptions:

In cyberspace ,the real body appears in front of the computer screen, the virtual body is generated in the electronic environment through language and semiotic marks. The project uses virtual characters as the identity medium. It is intended to explore the potential links and limitations between virtual characters and users.

Mujin BAO

Recommendations:

Silva + is a very witty work. The author's virtual image swims in the time and space that the author cannot reach, extending the author's perception and allowing the audience to reflect: in the end, the subject controls the incarnation? The incarnation still controls the subject.

The incarnation of the performance in the virtual space is like a sense of behavior, protesting the limitations of the space where the body cannot escape.

 Infinite Extension

August ZHANG

Descriptions:

With the growth of human economy, private space becomes more and more narrow, and some people become more and more depressed. In the long run, they will form a comfort zone, which leads to people being satisfied with the status quo instead of breaking through. Office workers and otaku are typically represented, They have been in their comfort zone for a long time without enough communication and interest in the outside world. Dreams, however, seem to be a kind of unconscious breakthrough in the human brain. When the experience in the dream is in contrast with the reality, people will have the idea of breaking out of their comfort zone.

Junyuan FENG

Recommendations:
